Krasi delivers 120 minutes fire protection using Promat board encasement

As a highly experienced specialist contractor, Krasi Fire Protection Ltd. carried out the precision installation of the Promat (vermiculux?) VERMICULUX®-S board encasement system to protect the structural steel frame throughout an existing industrial building near Oxford; coordinating its efforts with the main contractor to help ensure the programme targets for the refurbishment were met.

The Midlands based company has invested time and resources in having a large proportion of its operatives trained in the installation of the Promat systems, so that contracts can be completed in full compliance with relevant EN standards as well as site specific quality requirements. In the case of the 600 square metre facility, the scope of the works encompassed the protection of lift shafts and staircases as well as the multiplicity of steel columns and beams. The 10-strong workforce installed a total of 950 squaremetres over the 12-week period of the project.

The 20, 30 and 35mm thick calcium silicate boards were installed by screw fixing them to steel angles, aligning and sealing the cut-to-size boards as necessary to guarantee the 120 minutes integrity will be achieved in an actual fire emergency. Regular inspections to ensure full compliance were carried out at stages throughout the installation, with the contract being supervised by the founder, Krasimir Mitev.

Krasimir commented: “The project was successfully delivered on time and to a very high standard technically, with design detailing and on-site support from Promat. Adding the Promat systems to our range of passive fire protection solutions has significantly increased our capabilities and I am confident it will help us secure an even greater variety of work in the future.”

Supplied in standard sheet dimensions, A1 non-combustible VERMICULUX®-S boards offer excellent durability and are resistant to impact damage, while providing periods of fire resistance up to four hours. Importantly, they are covered by an EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) and are chemically inert meaning they present no risk to human health or the environment.

Together with product data sheets, Krasi’s handover documentation for the project included installation details, programme records and site photography, as well as the quality inspection certificates.
