The architect’s role is changing. Is the industry ready?

Architects have always combined creativity, design expertise and technical knowledge. These skills remain essential, but they are no longer enough on their own. As projects become more complex, data-driven and accountable, architects are being asked to look beyond the drawing board and connect design decisions with commercial priorities, regulatory requirements, sustainability goals and delivery outcomes.

This broader remit elevates the architect’s role within the project. Value is no longer defined by design quality alone, but by how effectively firms manage information, collaborate across disciplines and turn complex project data into better decisions.

Rising expectations

Today, projects must be delivered faster, more efficiently and with greater transparency. Clients, contractors, regulators and investors want clearer visibility over performance, cost, risk and sustainability outcomes. This places new expectations on architects whose decisions at the design stage can have a significant impact on bid outcomes, delivery timelines, budgets, operational performance and long-term asset value.

Architects are well placed to respond to this shift. They already sit between clients, consultants, contractors and specialist teams, giving them a unique view across the project lifecycle. As delivery becomes more interconnected, their ability to align stakeholders, interpret requirements and translate information into action becomes even more valuable.

From designers to coordinators of people, data and digital workflows

Modern construction projects generate vast volumes of information, from BIM models and design iterations to sustainability data, compliance documents, operational insights and performance records. At the same time, architects are working across increasingly distributed teams, collaborating with multi-disciplinary consultants, contractors and clients in real time, and combining office work with remote and on-site.

This is placing greater pressure on traditional IT environments that were never designed to support the scale, flexibility and performance that modern architecture delivery typically requires.

For architecture teams, this is changing the nature of project leadership. Their role has evolved beyond creating and coordinating design outputs to ensuring the information behind those outputs is accessible, secure, validated and available when teams need it. Whether accessing BIM data, running visualisations or collaborating across disciplines, architects increasingly depend on digital environments that can support demanding workloads without compromising performance. Rising demand for photo-realistic visualisations, fast rendering, and detailed AR/VR simulations is increasing the pressure for high-performance, low latency IT solutions. 76% of firms face challenges adapting their existing IT infrastructure to future business needs.

The organisations making the most progress are taking a broader view of digital transformation, modernising the environments that sit behind project delivery. A cloud smart approach places each workload in the right environment – on-premises, public, private, sovereign cloud or edge – for optimal performance, cost-efficiency, security, and compliance. Forward-thinking firms are increasingly adopting virtual workstations and creating more flexible IT models that allow resources to scale alongside project requirements. By matching infrastructure to workload demand, firms can improve efficiency, support collaboration and avoid overinvesting in capacity and performance that may only be needed at specific stages of a project.

AI and digital tools are reshaping creativity and project delivery

These foundations are becoming even more important as AI begins to play a larger role across architecture and the wider built environment. Three quarters of architecture firms plan to expand their use of AI further over the next 12 months, with much of the industry conversation focused on design. AI tools are already helping architects explore concepts more quickly, test ideas and accelerate parts of the creative process. Rather than replacing the architect, AI is increasingly augmenting their role, meaning their design skills, tacit knowledge and human judgement are more pivotal than ever.

However, the bigger opportunity extends beyond design into knowledge management, project coordination, and operational intelligence. Insights gathered across the full asset life cycle are fed back to inform future decisions, and this advantage compounds over time as firms leverage knowledge and identify trends gained across historic portfolios.

The challenge is that AI is only as effective as the information and infrastructure supporting it. As AI-driven design tools, automation platforms and advanced visualisation capabilities become more common, firms need environments capable of handling increasingly intensive workloads. However, the majority of firms say their IT operating models are not fit for the age of AI. Fundamentally, AI doesn’t fix poor data or broken processes; it tends to expose them. Organisations operating on fragmented systems or inflexible infrastructure often find that AI reveals existing limitations rather than creating any new value.

Building the right foundations

Preparing for the changing role of the architect starts with strengthening digital capability across the organisation. That means ensuring all project data is clean, accessible and consistently managed, but it also means developing the skills, processes and leadership needed to turn technology into better outcomes.

Leaders have a critical role to play. Digital transformation should not be treated as a one-off IT decision or delegated entirely to technical specialists. It cannot be something “done to” architects by IT departments. The firms creating lasting value will bring architects, project leaders, IT and business leadership together around common outcomes. Otherwise, organisations will end up with sophisticated technology sitting on top of unchanged ways of working.

First and foremost, technology strategy must start with a desired business outcome and clear success metrics to be achieved. Any investment should be underpinned by a broader understanding of how platforms, data management, workflows and emerging technologies influence real-world operations and project delivery. Leaders must consider not only which tools teams use, but whether the underlying infrastructure can support them efficiently. Increasingly, many successful firms are adopting more flexible, usage-based technology models that allow them to align costs with project activity, scale resources when demand increases and remain agile as technology and business needs evolve.

By understanding how information moves through a project, where decisions are delayed and where digital tools can improve collaboration, architects can help firms move from isolated technology adoption to more intelligent project delivery. By analysing patterns across portfolios of work, firms can use AI to surface insights that reduce delays and protect margins. This means architects are increasingly well-positioned to deliver real commercial impacts, spanning profitability, risk prediction and compliance.

The businesses that gain the greatest advantage will be those that combine creativity with stronger digital maturity, giving teams the confidence to innovate without losing control of quality, risk or accountability.

Preparing for the next chapter of architecture

The architect of the future will still need to design spaces that are functional, sustainable and inspiring, but they will also need to operate in a world where digital capability increasingly shapes project success. Architecture firms must take steps to combine design excellence with secure collaboration, scalable IT infrastructure and the ability to adapt technology resources to changing business demands. In an industry defined by complexity, digital agility and access to the right intelligence at the right time are becoming just as important as creativity itself. The future architect isn’t necessarily the person who knows the most about technology; they’ll be the person who understands how technology, information and human judgement combine to make better decisions.
