One of the latest builds in the Government’s £50 billion new hospital building and extensions programme is a new hospital currently being constructed over a period of three to five years within the grounds of the existing Shrewsbury hospital. The new build is part of Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals (SaTH) – Hospital Transformation Programme (HTP).
BEWI has been delighted to supply Jabfloor Floor Insulation Boards on each level of the new building, in a total area of 20,000ft2 during the course of the build.
The BEWI product was specified due to its enhanced operating specification and durability, as well as the fact it can withstand high loads, such as hospital beds and trolleys.
Jabfloor boards provide a cost-effective solution, while achieving impressive U-values and excellent compressive performance, making them suitable for a range of different floor applications. These include below ground supported slabs, above slabs and below chipboard, above slabs and below the screed, precast suspended concrete and cold stores. On this project the boards are being used below the screed as part of the underfloor heating system of the hospital.
The insulation boards are made from high-quality expanded polystyrene (EPS), and can be used primarily to provide thermal insulation in both domestic and commercial floors. They meet building regulations and offer a durable, rot-proof, and lightweight solution for ground-bearing and suspended construction.
They are available in a number of different thicknesses for different applications, ranging from Jabfloor 70 for standard domestic loads, up to Jabfloor 150 – 250 for heavy commercial or industrial use. Boards in a range of thicknesses, installed to a rigorous QA system, were used on this project to suit specific design requirements in differing areas within the hospital, including a specially produced Jabfloor 300, demonstrating how BEWI is willing to work with its customers to produce tailored products to meet specific market needs.
The BEWI technical sales team is supporting the project throughout, providing specific site installation guidance, QA visits, technical advice and knowledge during the installation.
The developer on the project was Vinci Building. Gordon McCartin, Vinci’s Project Manager, says:
“We were delighted to work with BEWI on this project and were happy to select the Jabfloor product, due to its enhanced operating specification and durability and its high load-bearing capability as part of the build-up for the underfloor heating system.”
The project contractor was Midlands Floor Screeding. Louis Dewsbury of Midlands Floor Screeding said:
“We found the Jabfloor product really easy to work with, helping to speed work on the build, and we are confident that the installation will play an important part in helping to maintain the energy efficiency of the building as a whole, creating a more comfortable environment for patients and staff, and helping to reduce running costs.”
