The new home of the BBC Symphony Orchestra has been completed with the highest levels of acoustic performance thanks to a market-leading block manufacturer.
The state-of-the-art BBC Music Studios has been designed to establish East London as a world destination for music, located at the heart of a new cultural quarter in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
The 8,500m² facility will stage live performances, recording sessions and orchestra rehearsals.
The challenge
Music facilities require extremely high levels of acoustic performance. This is especially important at a venue like BBC Music Studios, which houses multiple recording studios, rehearsal spaces and a performance stage.
The main challenge is preventing sound transmission between rooms – meaning internal walls need strong acoustic separation delivered in coordination between insulated blockwork manufacturers, contractors and acoustic specialists.
Blockwork formed the backbone of acoustic planning on the project.
Deliveries also required careful planning to meet strict site access windows spread throughout the day to meet the pace of the programme.
The solution
Contractors Galostar turned to Lignacite and its high-density blocks to overcome the project’s extensive acoustic challenges.
For areas requiring the highest level of sound insulation, high-density Lignacrete blocks were the perfect solution, alongside the smaller Lignacrite Midi blocks. Both offer enhanced acoustic performance and helped the developer meet the decibel ratings set out in the project’s design.
The project also included Lignacite Paint Grade blocks, selected by the architect not just for their sleek finish and visual effect, but for how they integrate support within the masonry.
This meant removing the need for separate wind posts and fireboard finishes.
