Building a home for retirement: Margaret and Mike’s self-build story

When Margaret and Mike decided to build their own home in Norfolk, they knew what mattered most: a sustainable, well-insulated house designed around their lifestyle, with generous living space, a large garden and beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.

Having moved several times before, they wanted a home where they could enjoy retirement without compromising on quality. They considered renovating an older
property but decided that building from scratch would give them greater control over the result.

Timber frame was an obvious choice. Mike was already familiar with the construction method and understood its speed, while their search for a suitable supplier led them
to English Brothers, whom they first encountered at a show.

“We wanted a very sustainable option. So we wanted good quality, well-insulated home,” explains Margaret. “It was the quality and the experience and the craftsmanship that there really wasn’t anyone else that was comparable.”

The couple were also impressed by the company’s heritage and the quality of its timber frame panels. Having visited the factory and discussed their project, they felt confident they had found the right partner.

Time was an important consideration, and timber frame delivered. Work began in May, and by December they were living in their new home. The efficient construction process and the erection team helped make that timescale possible.

The finished house reflects their priorities, with generous windows bringing in natural light and framing views across the fields and woodland. They even chose the most adventurous of their architect’s three design concepts, rather than opting for something more traditional.

Their advice to other self-builders is to prepare thoroughly but expect the unexpected. Despite researching the project carefully, unforeseen costs arose from ground conditions and the removal of heavy clay. However, they chose to invest in the garden, which had always been a priority.

Just as important was the relationship with their supplier. Margaret and Mike valued the guidance and reassurance they received from English Brothers throughout the build.

Above all, they made a conscious decision to enjoy the journey, spending time on site and learning as they went. Would they self-build again? Absolutely. As Mike explains, you don’t really start learning until you start building. Watch Margaret and Mike’s self-build story
