Construction starts on Europe’s first dismantlable indoor swimming pool in modular timber construction in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen/Germany

Construction begins on Europe’s first dismantlable indoor swimming pool in timber modular construction:

A pioneering municipal swimming pool construction project is underway in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen.

Early November 2025, the go-ahead was given in Stuttgart- Zuffenhausen for a construction project that is unique in Europe:

The first wooden modules for a transportable and fully dismantlable indoor swimming pool were delivered and assembled

at the Kelterplatz on Hohenloher Straße. The building is expected to be fully constructed in just a few weeks – an example of just how quickly, sustainably and flexibly municipal swimming pools can be built today. The interior work will then be finalised. With a 25-metre pool, five lanes and a partially adjustable floor, the pool offers functional facilities of the highest quality.

It sets standards in several respects – ecologically, structurally and in terms of urban planning. The aim is to create reliable replacement water areas during renovations and the new construction of other facilities – for schools, clubs and the general public. Innovative concept based on modular timber construction This forward-looking project was developed by POOL out of the BOX, specialists in modular and serial indoor swimming pool construction.

The architecture was designed by 4a Architekten, supported by the timber construction company Blumer Lehmann, Kannewischer Ingenieure, ZELLER Bäderbau (stainless steel pools) and Wassertechnik Wertheim. Designed for disassembly – built to last The indoor swimming pool follows the principle of “designed for disassembly – built to last”: It is designed so that it can be completely dismantled, transported and rebuilt elsewhere. This is made possible by a modular timber construction method with a high degree of prefabrication, which enables short assembly times and significantly reduces its carbon footprint. The project thus fulfils key EU sustainability targets and is based on the cradle-to-cradle principle.

A total of 46 modules – 28 on the ground floor and 18 on the upper floor – form the functional areas such as changing rooms, supervision rooms, technical rooms and sanitary facilities. The standardised modules measuring 3.50 x 9.90 metres are supplemented by customised special modules, for example in the pool area and for technical equipment. Facade elements, ceilings and installations are also largely prefabricated and some have already been installed at the factory.

Wood as the building material of the future In addition to its mobility, the project impresses with its consistent use of wood – from the supporting structure and façades to the substructure of the stainless-steel pool. This reduces climate- damaging emissions and enables a high degree of recycling.

All modules and almost all components are designed so that they can be reused after their initial use – a truly forward-looking model for public swimming pool construction. Outlook The mobile pool in Zuffenhausen is scheduled to go into operation mid 2026. Further locations are planned in Möhringen and Untertürkheim. With the pilot project in Zuffenhausen, which is also part of the IBA’27 network of the International Building Exhibition 2027 StadtRegion Stuttgart, the state capital Stuttgart is breaking new ground in municipal swimming pool construction – ecologically, efficiently and with an eye to the future.
