Exploring the relationship between ageing, hearing loss, dementia, and the built environment, emphasizes how room acoustics can significantly affect communication, wellbeing, and quality of life for older adults and people living with a dementia.
It is acknowledged that hearing loss is a common part of ageing, with nearly 80% of people over 70* experiencing some degree of hearing impairment. This particularly affects the ability to distinguish consonants, which carry much of the information in speech. In noisy environments, older adults may hear people’s voices but struggle to understand what is being said, leading to communication difficulties and frustration. People with a dementia may be particularly vulnerable to sensory overload from noisy or cluttered environments.
Research has been undertaken linking hearing loss with cognitive decline and dementia, whilst hearing loss is considered a risk factor, it does not necessarily lead to dementia. Further research is required on potential links and mechanisms including the effect of increased cognitive load, changes in neural pathways, brain structure alterations, and the effects of social isolation.
What is more commonly recognised is that hearing loss and dementia often produce similar consequences. These include additional cognitive load, reduced interaction, social withdrawal, exclusion from community activities, and avoidance of noisy environments, leading to reduced confidence and increased isolation.
Poorly designed acoustic environments can therefore become a barrier to inclusion and participation.
There are practical acoustic design solutions to create more dementia and age-inclusive environments including:
- Sound insulation to prevent noise transfer between spaces.
- Sound absorption to reduce reverberation and improve speech clarity.
- Sound diffusion to manage sound reflections in large or sparsely furnished rooms.
Good acoustic design is not simply about comfort; it is an important element of inclusive design that can improve communication, reduce cognitive strain, support social engagement, and enhance quality of life for many including older adults and people living with a dementia.
