Hidden Heroes: Discrete Ridge Ventilation

Dry fix ridge and hip kits that can provide ventilation have long been a staple of pitched roofing ventilation compliance, and with the combination of various surface and eaves ventilator types, there are more options than ever to ensure adequate airflow through the roof space. However, there has been an increasing need for more discreet ventilation and there are now options for this requirement. In this article, Hambleside Danelaw round up the benefits of discreet ridge ventilation, offer points to consider when selecting the best option featuring some of these ‘hidden heroes’.

Why might Discreet Ventilation be Required?

Discrete roofing ventilation may be needed to address specific architectural or aesthetic requirements, for example in heritage refurbishments where it is necessary to maintain the original appearance, or because there is a preference for an uninterrupted roofscape without the interruption of a vent or the appearance of ‘modern’ materials. Discrete roofing ventilation can also result in the combined benefits of meeting the roof ventilation requirements, as well as maintaining the traditional application of mortar which may be a preferred aesthetic. Discrete ridge ventilation can now meet the meet the requirements of the regulations and mitigate the risk of the consequences from condensation forming in roofs where improvements, refurbishments and renovations are being carried out.

Types of Discreet Ridge Ventilation

Mortar

While dry fix ventilated ridge systems are already reasonably subtle, there remains the ridge tile jointers or gaskets that replace the traditional mortar. While this is fine for most projects, there are many instances where the appearance of mortar is required, such as historically graded buildings, or properties with a heritage background. Previously, it has been a challenge to both ventilate and apply mortar at the ridge line. This is where Hambleside Danelaw’s patented VentRidg® offers the best of both worlds (Patent Application No. GB 2417868.3)

With a bonding strip on the upper side of the GRP tray and a ventilation roll adhered to the underside, the mortar can be applied directly to the VentRidg® panels. It is then possible to have high level ventilation at the ridge without compromising the preferred aesthetic finish.

Roll Top Ridge and Hips

When considering roofing materials, lead and other heavy metals have been used for centuries – acclaimed for their durability. These materials do have their drawbacks however including contaminated water run-off, high expense, the need for skilled labour, and the increased risk of theft. There is, much like with mortar, no real opportunity to introduce ventilation along the ridge. GRP has proven itself to be a worthy lead alternative, with many years of proof in use for a range of roof flashings including the ubiquitous valley troughs. Now with Hambleside Danelaw’s SwiftRidg®+, shortlisted for Most Innovative Product in 2024’s Pitched Roofing Awards, you can avoid the use of ridge tiles and have the appearance of formed metal roll top ridge and hips with no water contamination, no scrap value and therefore lessened theft risk, as well as ventilation at the ridge.

SwiftRidg® has been tested in BRE’s wind tunnel, and withstood winds of over 110mph (the maximum the tunnel can offer). With it’s unique, patented, omega shaped concealed fixing bracket, the SwiftRidg®+ kit can provide a minimum 7,500mm² airflow ventilation area per linear meter, and is compliant with the requirements of BS 5534, BS 5250 and BS 8612 (Patent Application No. 2308115.1).

Innovation and Development

The drive to innovate is at the heart of Hambleside Danelaw’s ethos, and with products such as the original valley troughs, Bonding Gutters, InVerg interlocking dry verge, CON6+, CLAY6+ and MONO6+ dry fix ventilating ridge and hip kits, all originating from this British manufacturer, it is clear that they are committed to maintaining this trend.
