Lighting for better living: How Circadian Care technology is transforming Dementia care

Sunlight has governed human biology since long before architecture existed. It drives our circadian rhythm, regulating serotonin, cortisol and melatonin — the chemistry behind sleep, mood and alertness. Yet most indoor lighting, including that often used in the care settings where our most vulnerable citizens live, ignores this entirely. The result is measurable: disturbed sleep, night wandering, sundowning, and a heightened risk of falls.

Circadian lighting automatically adjusts in colour and intensity throughout the day, mimicking natural daylight patterns, proactively supporting wellbeing.

The evidence for a different approach is now substantial. Published research shows circadian lighting can reduce daytime napping by 56% and night wandering by 55% for adults living with dementia, while a two-year study of 600 care home residents at Brigham and Women’s Hospital recorded a 43% reduction in falls.
