Hinges account for only a small proportion of the cost of a typical door assembly, yet they play a critical role in how doors perform throughout their lifespan.

A new RIBA-approved CPD from hinge specialists SIMONSWERK explores the factors that influence hinge specification, helping architects understand how considerations such as door properties, applied hardware, environment and fire safety requirements can all affect hinge selection.

“Specifying Door Hinges: Balancing Design, Performance and Compliance” covers two RIBA core curriculum areas, legal, regulatory and statutory compliance, and design, construction and technology.

The CPD provides a practical framework that architects can use to support early design decisions and discussions with specialist suppliers. The presentation also includes project examples to demonstrate how hinge specification responds to different architectural requirements.
