Plans approved for characterful new homes at historic Chorlton site

Local housebuilder Cube Homes is set to breathe new life into a long-abandoned former school site in Chorlton-cum-Hardy after being granted planning permission for its latest residential scheme, Chorlton Grange.

The £25 million project will transform the site of the former Manchester Islamic High School for Girls on High Lane into 22 high-quality homes, combining modern design with local character and a respectful restoration of a much-loved Victorian building.

Chorlton Grange will occupy a brownfield site that has lain vacant for over three years. With construction expected to begin in early summer and site launch planned for mid-June, Cube Homes’ plans mark a new chapter for the location, helping to regenerate the area while preserving its heritage.

Chris Heath, Managing Director at Cube Homes, said:

“As a regional developer with strong local roots, we’re proud to be bringing this special building back to life for the community. Chorlton Grange is part of Chorlton’s story and we’re making sure it remains part of its future, as well as investing heavily into local transport and infrastructure. The wider development at Chorlton Grange has been carefully designed to reflect the needs of the local area – quality family homes that complement the character of this neighbourhood, whilst rejuvenating brownfield land. Working with local subcontractors has been an important collaboration for this site and has led to the successful delivery of much needed affordable and private homes to the Chorlton market.”

At the centre of the development sits Carlton House, a red brick villa that once served as a convent school and later, a girls’ high school. Cube Homes will retain and convert the historic building into two distinctive four-bedroom semi-detached houses, restoring its original features and securing its future in the community. The house, named after former headteacher Mrs Carlton, has long been a recognisable part of the local landscape.

The remainder of the site will be sensitively developed to include a mix of townhouses and family homes, alongside six apartments on Stockton Road – four of which will be delivered as Shared Ownership in partnership with a local Registered Provider. The design blends traditional materials with thoughtful modern touches such as oversized windows, beautifully crafted kitchens and carefully curated outdoor spaces.
