Projects worth over £1billion up for grabs at Construction and Design event

As economic indicators suggest a fragile recovery and the construction industry is reporting improved financial results, a Midlands-based events company is hosting an event that aims to match potential suppliers in the design and construction sectors with businesses looking to source and fulfil projects worth over £1billion.

The Construction and Design event includes an industry dinner and takes place on 28th and 29th October at the five star Marriott Grosvenor House Hotel, London. Representatives from some of the UK’s largest companies have registered to attend including county councils, universities, the NHS and Network Rail. Large retailers attending will include Tesco, Halfords, Pets at Home and John Lewis.

All ‘buyers’ are surveyed to determine their specific requirements so that meetings can be perfectly matched. Buyers that will be present at the October event are seeking suppliers to help with projects such as a £200million regeneration scheme, a town centre redevelopment and the design and construction of a 200-unit housing estate.

Phil Halcrow is managing director of event organisers, Platform Events. He said:

“There are many substantial construction projects underway and sizeable contracts to be awarded, yet one of the biggest issues is how to get access to the decision makers. The sales process can be protracted and with ‘preferred supplier’ lists it is difficult to have an opportunity to tender, especially for SMEs.

“Our event enables time-strapped company representative to conduct face to face meetings with buyers of their services in one place on one day. The active industry buyers that have registered to attend this Platform have specified genuine projects and supply chain requirements they want to discuss and source products and services for, related to their projects.

“Our approach works because it ensures that everyone’s needs are met. People have specific meetings with those who can provide exactly what they’re looking for. It could take you months to schedule in that many meetings amongst normal working commitments, so this allows you to sort out project requirements quickly and efficiently. Nothing can replace the power of a face to face meeting for building a relationship.”

One company benefitting from the Platform approach is the Diverse Cleaning Company South Ltd who landed a contract with the country’s biggest DIY retailer, B&Q, after having attended a Platform Event earlier in 2013.

Diverse Cleaning now provides specialist high level cleaning services at B&Q’s headquarters in Hampshire. Managing director, Ian Skinner, says:

“The work included external high level building cleaning, substantial window cleaning and internal high level cleaning using innovative high reach vacuum systems.

“We are delighted to have this fantastic opportunity of working for an industry leader. Niche businesses like ours can meet the needs of the country’s larger companies but it is so difficult to get the opportunity to meet them. Attending the Platform really opened doors for us.”
