The Built Environment Unites for Clean Air Day Driving Forward Low-Emission Construction

Today, stakeholders across the UK built environment are marking Clean Air Day, the UK’s largest air quality awareness campaign, by spotlighting the sector’s critical role in reducing air pollution and advancing sustainable construction practices.

Clean Air Day highlights the health and environmental impact of air pollution, particularly in densely built urban areas where construction activity is most concentrated. This year’s theme, “Clean Up Our Air to Look After Your Mind,” underscores the link between air quality and mental wellbeing, while prompting renewed calls for the industry to accelerate adoption of low-emission technologies and greener site operations.

Contractors, developers, and suppliers nationwide are participating by showcasing innovations including electric plant machinery, hybrid power solutions, and advanced dust suppression systems. Industry leaders are also drawing attention to workforce health, as site operatives are among the most vulnerable to air pollution exposure.

Sarah Mitchell, director at BuildGreen UK, said:

“Air quality is not just a city issue – it’s a construction issue. From choosing low-emission equipment to planning for fewer deliveries, we already have tools at our disposal to reduce our environmental footprint.”

The Construction Leadership Council (CLC), alongside other trade bodies, is using the occasion to encourage organisations to adopt the Clean Air Framework and align with broader Net Zero commitments – reaffirming that air quality and sustainable construction go hand-in-hand.

As the industry continues to adapt to environmental, social, and regulatory pressures, Clean Air Day offers a timely opportunity to reflect, innovate, and demonstrate leadership in delivering a cleaner, healthier built environment.
