This RIBA award-winning project shows how versatile sliding doors can be

Over the past ten years ultra-slim sliding doors with incredibly narrow frames and large glazed panels have become a hugely popular option for renovation, extension or new-build residential projects.

Whilst the majority of designs call for straight-forward two, three or four panel sets of doors, the versatility of sliding systems means advanced products like theEDGE2.0 from IDSystems are capable of far more complex designs – perfectly demonstrated by this RIBA award-winning extension by Emil Eve Architects.

The Edwardian house in leafy Harpenden has been converted back into a family home with the addition of a large open-plan extension under a three-part saw tooth roof. The brief from the client was to create bright family living spaces and a better connection to the garden – something that Emil Eve Architects achieved by specifying theEDGE2.0 doors in three distinct configurations.

Clever sliding window design

At the centre of the elevation the architects have created a connection between inside and out by utilising theEDGE2.0 as a sliding window, finished off with a large window seat. The minimal frame and maximum glazing fill the dining room full of natural light but by designing the system as a window the architects have cleverly created a connection between home and garden whilst giving the space its own identity and flow. Post-free open corner sliding doors

To connect the main living space of the extension with the garden Emil Eve Architects specified an open corner set of theEDGE2.0 sliding doors from IDSystems. The post-free design provides a seamless connection between inside and out with the living space appearing to extend outside on to the sheltered patio. Learn more

Slender panel widths bring the outside in

Whilst sliding doors are renowned for their large panel widths, for the stunning new kitchen the architects opted for a 3-panel set of sliding doors with slender panel widths. The panels, measuring just 900mm wide, perfectly fit the available space and provide almost uninterrupted views into the garden. To match the extension’s waterstruck yellow bricks the frames are powder coated in a Light Ivory (RAL 1015) finish. Learn more
