Can showers safeguard against water scarcity?

The statistic that the UK is facing an estimated shortfall of five billion litres of water per day by 2050 is as damning as it is well documented. In September 2025, it was revealed that plans to build almost 30,000 new homes are currently being blocked by concerns over inadequate wastewater infrastructure. Two months later, research found that water scarcity could hamper the UK’s ability to reach its net zero targets.

Last year brought substantial droughts, with reservoir levels at their lowest for a decade. To suggest we are approaching a water crisis would be inaccurate – we are already in one. Households are facing exponentially rising utility bills, though the onus to cut consumption cannot fall solely on them. This comes at a time when the Government is exploring whether the Building Regulations 2010 should be amended to tighten water efficiency standards, enabling customers to use less water and reduce both water and energy bills. 

The consultation is looking to reshape how new housing developments are built to be more water efficient, mandating tighter limits on per capita consumption and encouraging the wider adoption of water reuse systems – supporting complementary sustainable technologies such as solar panels and heat pumps. Put all this aside, and the fact that it has never been more important to reduce both water and energy consumption still remains. What is the starting point?

Simple yet significant

As the largest domestic consumer of water, showers are an obvious target for reducing consumption. While electric showers are known for their energy efficiency, their water-saving potential is equally significant. By heating water on demand from the cold mains supply, electric showers remove the need to run taps while awaiting hot water – one of the most common sources of waste.

Electric showers tend to operate at lower flow rates than mixer showers, saving around 37.5 litres of water per shower without risking comfort. These features combine to make them an ideal solution for housebuilders where new homes are required to be more water efficient than the optional Building Regulations standard of 110 litres per person per day (l/p/d). 

This tighter limit – lower than the standard 125 l/p/d – is being adopted by a growing number to future-proof developments against water scarcity, with  widespread droughts likely for this year and beyond.

A dream team

The performance of instantaneous electric showers (IES) is amplified when paired with a waste water heat recovery system (WWHRS). These systems capture the heat from used shower water, which is typically lost down the drain, and use it to pre-warm the incoming cold mains water. The preheated water then enters the electric shower unit, substantially reducing the energy needed to reach the desired temperature.

This ‘passive’ process lowers a household’s CO2 emissions and energy bills while maintaining a consistent showering performance, especially during colder months when mains water temperatures drop.

When the shower is connected to a WWHRS, the operational carbon emissions, compared to a mixer shower, can negate its own embodied carbon footprint, including that of the WWHRS, in as little as three months. It also delivers a spray of around five litres per minute, meaning user satisfaction is delivered.

The duo also supports grid resilience by lowering peak energy demand, particularly during morning and evening usage spikes. For developers, it offers a practical route to achieving compliance with Part L of the Building Regulations, outperforming mixers in key SAP metrics like the Dwelling Emissions Rate (DER) and Dwelling Primary Energy Rate (DPER).

Turn the tide on water waste

As the nation’s water crisis appears to be more of a perennial problem, the urgency to rethink how we use water in our homes has never been greater. By adopting electric showers and pairing them with WWHRS, developers and homeowners alike can take significant steps towards reducing water and energy consumption, gaining resilience against future scarcity in the process.
